The PARKS project represents a transformative vision to revitalise urban environments in the municipalities of Dupnitsa and Kriva Palanka, addressing the pressing need for sustainable green infrastructure. As urbanisation intensifies, the ecological balance, aesthetic appeal, and overall well-being of urban communities often suffer. The PARKS project seeks to counter this trend, reimagining urban spaces to enhance the quality of life for residents while fostering a deep connection to nature and sustainability. This cross-border initiative, rooted in European values of cooperation and environmental stewardship, aims to create thriving urban green spaces that are not only beautiful but also resilient and community-oriented.

The Municipality of Dupnitsa, as the Lead Partner, plays a central role in the successful execution of this project. With autonomous decision-making authority in local governance, the municipality ensures that all project activities are efficiently managed and implemented. Dupnitsa is responsible for overseeing every aspect of the project, including monitoring progress, managing funds, reporting to the Joint Secretariat, and maintaining communication with the Managing Authority. The municipality also collaborates closely with the Municipality of Kriva Palanka to ensure that the project’s cross-border objectives are met. From procurement and contracting to technical supervision and reporting, Dupnitsa’s leadership guarantees the seamless execution of all project components, fostering a strong partnership and mutual commitment to success.

At the heart of the project is an integrated approach that combines innovative infrastructure development with environmental awareness and education. One of the key activities is the creation of a flagship green park in Kriva Palanka, designed as a symbol of ecological harmony and recreational engagement. In addition, previously barren or underutilised urban areas will be transformed into vibrant green oases tailored to meet the diverse needs of the community. These spaces will not only enhance the urban landscape but also provide opportunities for education, leisure, and social interaction, fostering a sense of ownership and pride among local residents.

The project also incorporates advanced environmental technologies to ensure the long-term sustainability of these green spaces. An air quality monitoring dashboard, developed in collaboration with local educational institutions, will provide real-time data on environmental parameters, enabling both citizens and authorities to monitor and respond to changes effectively. A tri-lingual plant growth manual will empower residents with practical knowledge on cultivating and protecting urban greenery, ensuring that the benefits of these spaces are maximised for years to come. Complementing these efforts is the development of a green cadastre, a comprehensive registry that systematically records green assets and infrastructure, enabling better management and strategic planning for future green initiatives.

The PARKS project is co-funded by the European Union through the Interreg IPA Cross- Border Programme for Bulgaria–North Macedonia. This funding programme, part of the EU’s Instrument for Pre-Accession Assistance (IPA), supports collaborative initiatives between neighbouring regions to address shared challenges and promote socio-economic development. By bringing together resources, expertise, and innovative approaches, the programme helps create solutions that benefit communities on both sides of the border. The PARKS project exemplifies the spirit of European solidarity, demonstrating how cross- border cooperation can drive meaningful change. By transforming urban areas into greener, healthier, and more sustainable spaces, the project not only addresses immediate environmental and social challenges but also sets a benchmark for future initiatives. Together, the municipalities of Dupnitsa and Kriva Palanka are creating a blueprint for urban resilience and ecological harmony, ensuring a lasting legacy for their communities and contributing to a brighter, greener future for the region.
